Hospice of the Valley FAQ

Have a hospice-related question? We have the answer. Check out these FAQs and give us a call today for more information!

  • Does hospice care mean “giving up?”

No. Hospice is a hope that tomorrow will be better than today through peace, comfort, and dignity. On average, hospice patients live 26 days longer than those who don’t receive hospice care.

  • What services does Hospice of the Valley provide?

Our team of physicians, nurses, social workers, hospice aides, chaplains, therapists, and volunteers provides medications, supplies, equipment, and more post-diagnosis.

  • When is hospice care necessary?

Hospice care is appropriate when the primary goal of care becomes comfort and relief rather than finding a cure. If a patient’s diagnosis meets the guidelines, typically when life expectancy is six months or less, they can benefit from hospice care.

  • How can the family care for the patient at home?

Our staff can provide several visits per week (more if needed) to provide care and education, as well as to evaluate their condition. We’ll help the family provide care and medication, and recognize common problems.

  • Must a patient live at home to receive hospice care?

No. Hospice care can be provided at home, a nursing home, an assisted living facility, or the hospital.

  • Can a patient’s existing physician be involved?

Yes. We will not take the place of a patient’s primary physician. We’ll work with them and your family to determine the appropriate level of care necessary. Our nurse practitioner and medical director can, however, provide oversight if requested.

  • How is hospice care paid for?

Private insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid pay for hospice benefits. However, we accept patients based on need, not your ability to pay.

  • Is hospice care only for the elderly?

No. We provide quality end-of-life support and care for all ages.

  • Is hospice care only for cancer patients?

No. Regardless of your diagnosis, if you are suffering from a life-limiting illness, you may be eligible for hospice care.

  • What kind of volunteer services are available at Hospice of the Valley?

Our 150+ volunteers provide day-to-day services that range from simple visits and delivering balloons to errand running, reading, and administering music or pet therapy.

  • When are services available?

Services are available to our patients 24/7.

  • Can hospice patients return to regular treatment if they’re improving?

Yes. If the patient no longer needs our care, they may choose to discontinue their hospice support. Additionally, if their illness comes back, they may return at any time.
